Jody Miles, Director of Kara Accountants

Meet Jody Miles: the director behind Kara Accountants

Kara is a small, family-run firm, so the people you speak to are the people doing your work. This month we’re introducing the team properly, starting with our Director, Jody Miles.

Who is Jody?

Jody runs Kara day to day alongside the team. He’s a CIMA Chartered Management Accountant (ACMA, CGMA) with a BSc (Econ), and he looks after clients’ accounts, tax and Xero set-ups – always with an eye on making the boring bits of running a business simpler.

A family firm since 1997

Nick Miles founded Kara in 1997 as a sole practitioner and built it up on recommendations. Nick is now semi-retired, but he’s still a part-owner and still involved behind the scenes.

What Jody does for clients

Day to day, that means year-end accounts, tax returns and getting Xero working properly for each business. We’re a Xero Gold Partner, clients share documents with us securely through our TaxDome client portal, and although we’re based in The Square, Fawley, we work with clients right across the UK.

Why a management accountant?

CIMA training is about using your numbers to run the business, not just filing returns once a year. That’s how we like to work: getting the compliance right, and helping you understand what the figures are telling you.

The team around him

Jody works alongside Lynne Baker (Office Manager), Hollie Jones (Accountant, with us since 2013), Tina Green MAAT (Bookkeeping and Payroll) and Nick. With a team of five, you deal with people who know your business – not an anonymous support desk. You can meet the whole team here.

Away from the desk

Outside the office, Jody helps run UK offshore powerboat racing.

Three things Jody wishes every client knew

  1. Keep your records up to date through the year. It’s far less work than catching up all at once, and it means fewer surprises.
  2. Don’t leave Self Assessment until January. Online returns for 2025 to 2026, and any tax owed, are due by 31 January 2027. If you’re employed or get a pension, owe less than £3,000 and file online by 30 December 2026, HMRC can usually collect the tax through your tax code instead.
  3. Talk to us before big decisions – taking dividends, buying equipment, taking on staff or selling an asset. It’s much easier to plan ahead than to fix things afterwards.
