Making Tax Digital with Xero
Making Tax Digital

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is the biggest change to Self Assessment in a generation. If you’re self-employed or a landlord, it will change how and when you report your income to HMRC.

Who has to join, and when?
It’s based on your qualifying income – your total turnover from self-employment and property, before expenses:
– Over £50,000 – from 6 April 2026
– Over £30,000 – from 6 April 2027
– Over £20,000 – from 6 April 2028

What changes?
You’ll need to keep digital records and send HMRC a short update every quarter, by 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May. You then finalise the year by 31 January, just as you do now.

How we help
– Check whether you’re in, and when you need to start
– Get you set up on Xero or other HMRC-recognised software
– Send your quarterly updates for you, or check yours before they go
– Complete your end-of-year final declaration

Limited companies aren’t affected yet – this applies to sole traders and landlords.
